Different NI classes apply based on employment status

Your employment type determines which National Insurance 'class' you pay. Employed (PAYE): You pay Class 1 NI, which is automatically deducted from your salary (12% on earnings £12,570-£50,270, then 2% above). Your employer also pays 13.8% on top. Self-Employed: You pay Class 2 (flat rate £3.45/week) plus Class 4 (9% on profits £12,570-£50,270, then 2% above) through Self Assessment.
